Bud, not Buddy / Christopher Paul Curtis.  1999.  Fic C9783bu.  Newbery Award Winner.  Coretta Scott King Award.     Ten-year-old Bud, a motherless boy living in Flint, Michigan, during the Great Depression, escapes a bad foster home and sets out in search of the man he believes to be his father--the renowned bandleader, H.E. Bunnicula: a rabbit tale of mystery / Deborah & James How.  1979.  Fic H855b.   Though scoffed at by Harold the dog, Chester the cat tries to warn his human family that their foundling baby bunny must be a vampire.  Lexile: 700L

Case of the deadly desperados / Caroline Lawrence.  2012.  Fic L4194c.    In 1862 Nevada Territory, after finding his foster parents murdered and scalped, twelve-year-old Pinky Pinkerton, son of a railroad detective and a Sioux Indian, inherits a valuable deed and must hide from dangerous Whittlin Walt and his gang of desperados.  Lexile: 750L

Chocolate war: a novel / Robert Cormier.  1974.  Fic C8115c.  A high school freshman discovers the devastating consequences of refusing to join in the school’s annual fund raising drive and arousing the wrath of the school bullies.  Lexile:  820L  

Cloudy with a chance of meatballs / Judi Barrett.  1978.  Fic B274c.  Life is delicious in the town of Chewandswallow where it rains soup and juice, snows mashed potatoes, and blows storms of hamburgers--until the weather takes a turn for the worse.  Lexile:  730L

Copper sun / Sharon M. Draper.  2006.  Fic D766c.  Coretta Scott Award.  Two fifteen-year-old girls--one a slave and the other an indentured servant--escape their Carolina plantation and try to make their way to Fort Moses, Florida, a Spanish colony that gives sanctuary to slaves.  Lexile:  820L  

Dead end in Norvelt / Jack Gantos.   2011.   Fic G2113d.   Newbery Award Winner.   In the historic town of Norvelt, Pennsylvania, twelve-year-old Jack Gantos spends the summer of 1962 grounded for various offenses until he is assigned to help an elderly neighbor with a most unusual chore involving the newly dead, molten wax, twisted promises, Girl Scout cookies, underage driving, lessons from history, typewriting, and countless bloody noses.  Lexile: 920L

Drinking gourd: a story of the Underground Railroad / F.N. Monjo.  1993.  Fic M744d.   When he is sent home alone for misbehaving in church, Tommy discovers that his house is a station on the Underground Railroad.  Lexile: 370L 

Fallen angels / Walter Dean Myers.  1988.  Fic M9969fal.  Seventeen-year-old Richie Perry, just out of his Harlem high school, enlists in the Army in the summer of 1967 and spends a devastating year on active duty in Vietnam.  Lexile: 650L

Flat Stanley / Jeff Brown.  2006.  OVERSIZE   Fic B8782f.   A picture book version of the story in which a bulletin board falls on Stanley while he is sleeping, and he finds that being flat has its advantages. Lexile: 640L

Giver / Lois Lowry.  2003. Fic L9216gi. Newbery Award Winner.   Given his lifetime assignment at the Ceremony of Twelve, Jonas becomes the receiver of memories shared by only one other in his community and discovers the terrible truth about the society in which he lives.  Lexile: 760L  

Glory be / Augusta Scattergood.  2012.  Fic S287g.  In the summer of 1964 as she is about to turn twelve, Glory’s town of Hanging Moss, Mississippi, is beset by racial tension when town leaders close her beloved public pool rather than desegregating it.  Lexile: 680L

Graveyard book / Neil Gaiman.  2008.  Fic G141g. Newbery Award Winner.  After the grisly murder of his entire family, a toddler wanders into a graveyard where the ghosts and other supernatural residents agree to raise him as one of their own.  Lexile: 820L  

Great and only Barnum: the tremendous, stupendous life of showman P.T. Barnum / Candace Fleming.  2009.  920.71 B263f.   Biography of P.T. Barnum, showman and founder of the Barnum & Bailey Circus.  Lexile: 980L

Harry Potter and the sorcerer’s stone / J.K. Rowling.  1997. Fic R8835ha.   Rescued from the outrageous neglect of his aunt and uncle, a young boy with a great destiny proves his worth while attending Hogwarts School for Wizards and Witches.   Lexile: 880L   

Harry, the dirty dog / Gene Zion.  1956.  Fic Z796ht.  When a white dog with black spots runs away from home, he gets so dirty his family doesn’t recognize him as a black dog with white spots.  Lexile: 700L  

Hatchet / Gary Paulsen.  1987.  Fic P332hat.   After a plane crash, thirteen-year-old Brian spends fifty-four days in the wilderness, learning to survive with only the aid of a hatchet given him by his mother, and learning also to survive his parents’ divorce. Lexile: 1020L  

 Heart and soul: the story of America and African Americans / Kadir Nelson.  2011.  OVERSIZE   973.0496073 N4276h.  Coretta Scott King Award Winner.   A simple introduction to African-American history, from Revolutionary-era slavery up to the election of President Obama.   Lexile:  1050L 

Hokey Pokey / Jerry Spinelli.  2013.  Fic S7575h.  Ever since they were Snotsippers, Jack and the girl have fought, until one day she steals his bike and as he and the Amigos try to recover it, Jack realizes that he is growing up and must eventually leave the "goodlands and badlands of Hokey Pokey."

Hunger games / Suzanne Collins.  2008.  Fic C7132h.   In a future North America, where the rulers of Panem maintain control through an annual televised survival competition pitting young people from each of the twelve districts against one another, sixteen-year-old Katniss’s skills are put to the test when she voluntarily takes her younger sister’s place.  Lexile: 810L

In the time of the drums / Kim L. Siegelson.  1999.  Fic S5717i.  Coretta Scott King Award.  Mentu, an American-born slave boy, watches his beloved grandmother, Twi, lead the insurrection at Teakettle Creek of Ibo people arriving from Africa on a slave ship.  Lexile:  570L  

Invention of Hugo Cabret: a novel in words and pictures / Brian Selznick. 2008. Fic S4696i. Caldecott Award Winner.   When twelve-year-old Hugo, an orphan living and repairing clocks within the walls of a Paris train station in 1931, meets a mysterious toy seller and his goddaughter, his undercover life and his biggest secret are jeopardized.   Lexile: 820L  

Island of the Blue Dolphins / Scott O’Dell.  1961.  Fic O23i.  Newbery Award Winner.  The gripping story of young Karana, who survives by herself for eighteen years on a deserted island off the California coast.  Lexile:  1000L

Justin Case: school, drool, and other daily disasters / Rachel Vail.  2010.  Fic V129j.     Justin didn’t get the teacher he wanted, he’s not in the same class as his best friend, and his little sister, Elizabeth, is starting kindergarten at his school. Elizabeth doesn’t seem nervous at all. Justin is very nervous about third grade.  Lexile:  790L 

King of the Wind / Marguerite Henry.  1948. Fic H523k.  Newbery Award Winner.    Traces the abuses and triumphs of the Arabian stallion who became a founding sire of the Thoroughbred breed, and of the mute Arabian boy who tended him as long as he lived.  Lexile:  830L 

Knuffle Bunny too: a case of mistaken identity

Madeline / Ludwig Bemelmans.  1939, 1954.  Fic B455m.   Madeline, smallest and naughtiest of the twelve little charges of Miss Clavel, wakes up one night with an attack of appendicitis.  Lexile: 540L  

Magician’s elephant / Kate DiCamillo.  2009.  Fic D5451ma.   When ten-year-old orphan Peter Augustus Duchene encounters a fortune teller in the marketplace one day and she tells him that his sister, who is presumed dead, is in fact alive, he embarks on a remarkable series of adventures as he desperately tries to find her.  Lexile: 730L

M.C. Higgins, the great / Virginia Hamilton.  1974.  Fic H2217m.  Newbery Award Winner.   As a slag heap, the result of strip mining, creeps closer to his house in the Ohio hills, fifteen-year-old M.C. is torn between trying to get his family away and fighting for the home they love.  Lexile: 620L

Roll of thunder, hear my cry / Mildred D. Taylor.  1976.  Fic T2443ro.  Newbery Award Winner.   A black family living in the South during the 1930’s are faced with prejudice and discrimination which their children don’t understand.  Lexile:  920L 

Sarah, plain and tall / Patricia MacLachlan.  1985.  Fic M1612s.  Newbery Award Winner.  When their father invites a mail-order bride to come live with them in their prairie home, Caleb and Anna are captivated by their new mother and hope that she will stay.  Lexile: 560L   

Splendors and glooms / Laura Amy Schlitz.  2012.  Fic S344s.  When Clara vanishes after the puppeteer Grisini and two orphaned assistants were at her twelfth birthday party, suspicion of kidnapping chases the trio away from London and soon the two orphans are caught in a trap set by Grisini’s ancient rival, a witch with a deadly inheritance to shed before it is too late.  Lexile: 670L
