Wordless Picture Books

The adventures of Polo / Regis Faller. 2006. Fic F194v, 2006.  Polo the dog sets out from his home and enjoys many adventures, including sailing his boat on top of a whale, roasting hot dogs over a volcano, and taking a ride in a spaceship built from a mushroom.

Anno’s U.S.A. / Mitsumasa  Anno.  1983. Fic A6154au, 1983b.  In wordless panoramas a lone traveler approaches the New World from the West in the present day and journeys the width of the country backward through time, departing the east coast as the Santa Maria appears over the horizon.

The arrival / Shaun Tan.  2007.  OVERSIZE Fic T1614a.  In this wordless graphic novel, a man leaves his homeland and sets off for a new country, where he must build a new life for himself and his family.

A ball for Daisy / Chris Raschka.  2011.  Fic R223b.  2012 Caldecott Award Winner.  A wordless picture book showing the fun a dog has with her ball, and what happens when it is lost.

Bluebird / Bob Staake.  2013. Fic S7748b.  A wordless picture book about the inspiring friendship that develops between a bluebird and a young boy.

While his mistress shops, Carl, a large dog, and the baby in his care explore the department store quite thoroughly and have a wonderful time.

Chalk / by Bill Thomson.  2010.  Fic T4824c.  Wordless picture book about three children who go to a park on a rainy day, find some chalk, and draw pictures that come to life.

When Fox makes off with Hen, it's up to her friends, Bear, Rabbit, and Rooster to rescue her.

Flotsam / David Wiesner.  2006.  Fic W65173f.  2007 Caldecott Award Winner.  The story of what happens when a camera becomes a piece of flotsam.

Good dog, Carl / by Alexandra Day.  1985. Fic D273g.  Lively and unusual things happen when Carl the dog is left in charge of the baby.

Home / Jeannie Baker.  2004. Fic B16785h.  A wordless picture book that observes the changes in a neighborhood from before a girl is born until she is an adult, as it first decays and then is renewed by the efforts of the residents.

The lion & the mouse / Jerry Pinkney.  2009.  2010 Caldecott Award Winner.  398.245 P6557ℓ.   In this wordless retelling of an Aesop fable set in the African Serengeti, an adventuresome mouse proves that even a small creature is capable of great deeds when she rescues the King of the Jungle.

Mouse around / Pat Schories.  1993.  Fic S374m, 1993.  A little mouse has a wonderful journey all around town when he falls from his nest into a plumber’s back pocket.

Museum trip / by Barbara Lehman.  2006.  Fic L523m.  In this wordless picture book, a boy imagines himself inside some of the exhibits when he goes on a field trip to a museum.

Peter Spier’s Rain.  1982. Fic S755r.  Two children play in their backyard during a rainy day.

Rainstorm / Barbara Lehman.  2007.  Fic L523ra.  In this wordless picture book, a boy finds a mysterious key which leads him on an adventure one rainy day.

The red book / by Barbara Lehman.  2004. Fic L523r.  This book is about a book, a magical red book without any words, and the friendship that develops around it.

Sector 7 / David Wiesner.  1999. Fic W65173s.  While on a school trip to the Empire State Building, a boy is taken by a friendly cloud to visit Sector 7, where he discovers how clouds are shaped and channeled throughout the country.

Sidewalk circus / Paul Fleischman and Kevin Hawkes.  2004. Fic F5966s.  A young girl watches as the activities across the street from her bus stop become a circus.

The snowman / Raymond Briggs.  1978.  OVERSIZE  Fic B8547s.  When his snowman comes to life, a little boy invites him home and in return is taken on a flight high above the countryside.

Snow sounds: an onomatopoeic story / David A. Johnson.  2006. Fic J6654s.  A nearly-wordless book in which a young boy, eager to reach a much-anticipated holiday party on time, listens to the sounds of the shovels, snow plow, and other equipment used to clear his way.

Time flies / Eric Rohmann.  1994. Fic R738t.  A wordless tale in which a bird flying around the dinosaur exhibit in a museum has an unsettling experience when it finds itself back in the time of living dinosaurs.

Tuesday / David Wiesner.  1991.  Fic W65173tu.  1992 Caldecott Award Winner.  Frogs rise on their lily pads, float through the air, and explore the nearby houses while their inhabitants sleep.

Unspoken: a story from the Underground Railroad / Henry Cole.   2012.  Fic C6889u.  In this wordless picture book, a young Southern farm girl discovers a runaway slave hiding behind the corn crib in the barn and decides to help him.

The yellow balloon / Charlotte Dematons. 2003. OVERSIZE  Fic D3722g, 2003.  A yellow balloon sails around the world.

Zoom / Istvan Banyai.  1995. Fic B2199z.  A wordless picture book presents a series of scenes, each one from farther away, showing, for example, a girl playing with toys which is actually a picture on a magazine cover, which is part of a sign on a bus, and so on.
