Harry Potter / J.K. Rowling.  2007.  Fic R8835hg.  Books 1 - 7.  Series chronicles the adventures of a wizard, Harry Potter, and his friends Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger, all of whom are students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy / Douglas Adams.  1979.  Fic A2117h.   Adams spoofs many core science fiction tropes: space travel, aliens, interstellar war--stripping away all sense of wonder and repainting them as commonplace, even silly.

Hello, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle. / Betty MacDonald. 1957. Fic M135h.  A woman with a magic way of curing children’s bad habits tries her hand with a bully, a whisperer, and a slowpoke and formulates cures for a show-off and a crybaby.

The Hobbit or There and Back Again / J.R.R. Tolkien. 1966. Fic T6498h.  The adventures of the well-to-do hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, who lived happily in his comfortable home until a wandering wizard granted his wish.

Howl’s moving castle / Diana Wynne Jones. 1986.  Fic J764how.  Eldest of three sisters in a land where it is considered to be a misfortune, Sophie is resigned to her fate as a hat shop apprentice until a witch turns her into an old woman and she finds herself in the castle of the greatly feared wizard Howl.

The hunger games / Suzanne Collins.  2008.  Fic C7132h.  In a future North America, where the rulers of Panem maintain control through an annual televised survival competition pitting young people from each of the twelve districts against one another, sixteen-year-old Katniss’s skills are put to the test when she voluntarily takes her younger sister’s place.

James and the Giant Peach: a children’s story / Roald Dahl. Fic D1317j.  James, an orphan, is being raised by his two horrible aunts, who treat him horribly, until one day…

Jessica’s guide to dating on the dark side / Beth Fantaskey.  2009.  Fic F2156j.  Seventeen-year-old Jessica, adopted and raised in Pennsylvania, learns that she is descended from a royal line of Romanian vampires and that she is betrothed to a vampire prince, who poses as a foreign exchange student while courting her.

The king of Attolia / Megan Whalen Turner.  2006.  Fic T9489k.  Eugenides, still known as a Thief of Eddis, faces palace intrigue and assassins as he strives to prove himself both to the people of Attolia and to his new bride, their queen.  (The Queen’s Thief, Book II).

The last book in the universe / Rodman Philbrick.  2000.  Fic P5446L.  After an earthquake has destroyed much of the planet, an epileptic teenager nicknamed Spaz begins the heroic fight to bring human intelligence back to the Earth of a distant future.

The Last Pendragon / Robert Rice. 1991. Fic R497B.  Devoted followers of King Arthur will relish the twists and turns of this telling that begins 11 years after Arthur received his fatal wound at the hand of his son, Medraut.

Leviathan / written by Scott Westerfeld.  2009.  Fic W526ℓ.  In an alternate 1914 Europe, fifteen-year-old Austrian Prince Alek, on the run from the Clanker Powers who are attempting to take over the globe using mechanical machinery, forms an uneasy alliance with Deryn who, disguised as a boy to join the British Air Service, is learning to fly genetically-engineered beasts.

Life as we knew it / Susan Beth Pfeffer.  2006.  Fic P524L.  Through journal entries sixteen-year-old Miranda describes her family’s struggle to survive after a meteor hits the moon, causing worldwide tsunamis, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe / C.S. Lewis. 1950. Fic L6732l  (Chronicles of Narnia).  First in the series of seven, this novel follows four ordinary children: Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie, who were evacuated to the English countryside from London in 1940 following the outbreak of World War II, on their adventures after they a wardrobe that leads to the magical land of Narnia.

The magician’s elephant / Kate DiCamillo.  2009. Fic D5451ma.  When ten-year-old orphan Peter Augustus Duchene encounters a fortune teller in the marketplace one day and she tells him that his sister, who is presumed dead, is in fact alive, he embarks on a remarkable series of adventures as he desperately tries to find her.

Matched / Ally Condie.  2010.  Fic C7455m.  All her life, Cassia has never had a choice. The Society dictates everything: when and how to play, where to work, where to live, what to eat and wear, when to die, and most importantly to Cassia as she turns 17, whom to marry. When she is Matched with her best friend Xander, things couldn’t be more perfect. But why did her neighbor Ky’s face show up on her match disk as well?

Nation / Terry Pratchett.  2008.  Fic P9118n.  After a devastating tsunami destroys all that they have ever known, Mau, an island boy, and Daphne, an aristocratic English girl, together with a small band of refugees, set about rebuilding their community and all the things that are important in their lives.

New moon / Stephenie Meyer.  2006.  Fic M6134n.  When the Cullens, including her beloved Edward, leave Forks rather than risk revealing that they are vampires, it is almost too much for eighteen-year-old Bella to bear, but she finds solace in her friend Jacob until he is drawn into a "cult" and changes in terrible ways.

The people of Sparks / Jeanne DuPrau.  2004.  Fic D942p.  Having escaped to the Unknown Regions, Lina and the others seek help from the village people of Sparks. Sequel to: The City of Ember.

Pretties / Scott Westerfeld.  2005.  Fic W526p.  Finally surgically transformed into a "pretty," sixteen-year-old Tally, now gorgeous and programmed to think only happy thoughts, is plagued by tangled memories of living in the Smoke, a rebel colony of "ugly" runaways hiding from the Special Circumstances authorities.

Redwall / Brian Jacques. 1986. Fic J19r.  When the peaceful life of ancient Redwall Abbey is shattered by the arrival of the evil rat Cluny and his villainous hordes, Matthias, a young mouse, determines to find the legendary sword of Martin the Warrior which, he is convinced, will help Redwall’s inhabitants destroy the enemy.

The Reptile Room / Lemony Snicket. 1999. Fic S672r.  After narrowly escaping the menacing clutches of the dastardly Count Olaf, the three Baudelaire orphans are taken in by a kindly herpetologist with whom they live happily for an all-too-brief time.

The Returning / Christine Hinwood. 2009.  Fic H6668r.  When the six-year war between the Uplanders and Downlanders is over and Cam returns home to his village, questions dog him, from how he lost an arm to why he was the only one of his fellow soldiers to survive, such that he must leave until his own suspicions are resolved.

River rats / Caroline Stevermer.  1992.  Fic S84897r.  Nearly twenty years after the holocaust called the Flash has destroyed modern civilization, Tomcat and a group of other orphans face danger as they steer an old steamboat over the toxic waters of the Mississippi River.

Savvy / by Ingrid Law.  2008.  Fic L4158s.  Recounts the adventures of Mibs Beaumont, whose thirteenth birthday has revealed her "savvy"--a magical power unique to each member of her family--just as her father is injured in a terrible accident.

Scorpio Races / Maggie Stiefvater.  2011.  Fic S8552s.  Nineteen-year-old returning champion Sean Kendrick competes against Puck Connolly, the first girl ever to ride in the annual Scorpio Races, both trying to keep hold of their dangerous water horses long enough to make it to the finish line.

Ship breaker / by Paolo Bacigalupi.  2010.  Fic B125s.  Michael L. Printz Award, 2011.  In a futuristic world, teenaged Nailer scavenges copper wiring from grounded oil tankers for a living, but when he finds a beached clipper ship with a girl in the wreckage, he has to decide if he should strip the ship for its wealth or rescue the girl.

After being captured and surgically transformed into a "special," teenaged Tally Youngblood, now a government agent programmed to protect society from outside threats, is ordered to eliminate the rebel colony New Smoke, Tally’s former home.

Splendors and glooms / Laura Amy Schlitz.  2012.  Fic S344s.   When Clara vanishes after the puppeteer Grisini and two orphaned assistants were at her twelfth birthday party, suspicion of kidnapping chases the trio away from London and soon the two orphans are caught in a trap set by Grisini’s ancient rival, a witch with a deadly inheritance to shed before it is too late.

Tale of Desperaux / Kate DiCamillo. Fic D545t.  The adventures of Despereaux Tilling, a small mouse of unusual talents, the princess that he loves, the servant girl who longs to be a princess, and a devious rat determined to bring them all to ruin.

Tender morsels / Margo Lanagan.  2008.  Fic L243t.  A young woman who has endured unspeakable cruelties is magically granted a safe haven apart from the real world and allowed to raise her two daughters in this alternate reality, until the barrier between her world and the real one begins to break down.

Things not seen / Andrew Clements.  2002.  Fic C6264t.  When fifteen-year-old Bobby wakes up and finds himself invisible, he and his parents and his new blind friend Alicia try to find out what caused his condition and how to reverse it.

Tuck Everlasting / Natalie Babbitt. 1975. Fic B112t.  The Tuck family is confronted with an agonizing situation when they discover that a ten-year-old girl and a malicious stranger now share their secret about a spring whose water prevents one from ever growing any older.
