Environmental, Geographical and Geological Sciences Research

Recommended Guides

Depending on which class you are taking, you may be asked to use different 'citation styles' to cite your research sources (that is, to create a bibliography of the books, articles, government documents, web pages, etc. which you have used for a paper or project). There are many different styles of citation, and each discipline tends to have its own unique style. You may be familiar with MLA (used most often in high school), APA (used most often in the social and health sciences), or Chicago Handbook of Style.

Academic disciplines also frequently use the citation style of the 'core' journals in their discipline. For instance, geographers often use the Annals of the Association of American Geographers style (a 6-page pdf is available here). Scientists in the geosciences and geology often use the styles of the Bulletin of the Geological Society of America or Geology, important journals published by the GSA.

Generally speaking, use the citation style required by your professor. If your professor doesn't require a particular style (ask him or her), then either use the style you're most familiar with or use the style of a 'core' journal for the course's discipline (ask your professor about this too).

Whatever style you use, remember that RefWorks can help you cite in correct format. Click here for more information on RefWorks.
