EndNote Basic

Directions on how to use and how to move your references from other programs like RefWorks.

Import into EndNote Basic

  1. Log into EndNote Online.
  2. Choose Collect, then Import.
  3. Browse to find the file you exported from Refworks. It is usually called username--export.txt unless you renamed it.
  4. Select the RefMan RIS filter from the drop down menu. Do NOT use the Refworks Import filter.

  5. Choose a folder to add the citations to. Choose New Group if you want to create a new folder. Choose Unfiled if you do not want to use a specific folder.
  6. Click the Import button. When the import is finished, you should get a message specifying the number of citations imported.

Export from Refworks

  1. Within Refworks, click on the References Menu and choose Export.
  2. Choose the folder you wish to export, or all. If you have folders in Refworks, you may choose to export each folder separately so that you can import the citations into equivalent folders in EndNote.
  3. Choose Bibliographic Software for the format. Then click Export to Text File.

  4. In most browsers the resulting file will display in the browser. In the File Menu, select Save As and save as a text file. If the browser asks you save the file directly, save it as a text file. Usually the file name will be username--export.txt, but you can change this if you want to. In most cases, it will be most convenient to save it to the Desktop, so that you can find the file easily in the next step.

Moving citations from Refworks to EndNote Basic

Moving your collected citations from Refworks to EndNote Web is a two stage process:

  1. Export your citations from Refworks into a file.
  2. Import that file into EndNote Web.
