RefWorks Guide

What is RefWorks?

  • RefWorks is a web–based reference management system that allows you to create a personal database with your references and to format references in a wide variety of citation styles (over 4,000!). References can be imported into RefWorks from many online databases and from Google Scholar. RefWorks also formats in-text citations, using either the Write-N-Cite plug-in for Word (available in both ProQuest Refworks and Legacy RefWorks) and the RefWorks Citation Manager (available with the new ProQuest ReWorks) which works in both Word and Google Docs.

Who has access to RefWorks?

  • RefWorks is available to all Bloomsburg students, faculty, staff, and alumni*, either on or off-campus.

*Alumni can keep their ProQuest RefWorks account. Some point before graduation, update your email address to the new domain ( and you'll be able to continue using your RefWorks account. Questions? Check out this FAQ on the ProQuest support page or Ask a librarian.

What's the difference between the new ProQuest RefWorks and the Legacy RefWorks?

The new ProQuest RefWorks offers a more user-friendly interface with some new features. The new features include a new RefWorks Citation Manager tool that works with both Google Docs and Microsoft Word. Users are also not limited in terms of how much full-text content they can upload to their accounts since storage is now cloud-based.

Although there are no official plans to sunset the Legacy RefWorks in the near future, nevertheless we encourage you to migrate your account to the new ProQuest RefWorks and begin using it. We will give everyone advance notice in the event ProQuest decides to retire the Legacy version.

Legacy RefWorks

Legacy RefWorks may be retired in the future, so you are encouraged to migrate your account to the new RefWorks. If questions, please Ask Us for help.
